Vladimir Putin falls over on lap of honour in exhibition ice hockey game in Sochi

Vladimir Putin scored at least eight goals in an exhibition ice hockey game - then fell flat on his face during a lap of honour.

The Russian President knows a thing or two about playing ice hockey. He has taken part in the annual Legends game half a dozen times in the past and scored many goals, although the exact total remains something of a mystery.

All was going well for the 66-year-old on his seventh appearance on Friday in Sochi, as he turned out with a number of former NHL greats, governors and a few billionaires.

After some questionable defending, the Associated Press reported the President scored eight goals while the Kremlin's account made it 10.

Putin's team won 14-7, leaving his goal tally over the years at approximately 36.

Plenty of cause for celebration, but when the time came for a victory lap, the President's evening took a turn for the worse.

Not seeing the red carpet that had been laid out on the ice, Putin's skate around the rink came to an abrupt halt.
